Harvey Haynes

In 1982, Mr. Haynes established Haynes & Associates to provide concrete consulting services to the construction industry, public agencies, and legal firms. His office specializes in investigating concrete problems.

Mr. Haynes has focused his career of over five decades, on the study of concrete as a construction material. He conducted research on concrete for 15 years at the Navy's Civil Engineering Laboratory. As an authority on concrete, he taught a graduate level course at the University of California at Berkeley. As an author, he published over 75 technical papers on concrete, and produced a video on "Avoiding Cracks in Concrete Slabs-on-Grade". For the past 40 years, he has been a consultant in private practice.

Specific Work Experience

  • Evaluated sulfate attack, alkali silica reaction, reinforcement corrosion, fire damage, and other deterioration mechanisms to concrete
  • Investigated the cause of cracking in warehouse slabs, airport aprons, tilt-up walls, glass fiber reinforced concrete facing panels, and other elements
  • Investigated overlay delamination in bridge decks, water tanks, terrazzo systems and others
  • Investigated moisture-vapor emission problems in concrete slabs
  • Developed roller compacted concrete mixtures for a dam and heavy-duty parking lot
  • Determined durability of concrete to marine environments and to municipal landfill leachates
  • Investigated distress to prestressed concrete structures
  • Conducted condition surveys of buildings, piers and dams for material deterioration and steel reinforcement corrosion
  • Wrote quality control program for high strength concrete (10,000 psi)
  • Wrote concrete specifications for hot weather placement, repairs, warehouse slabs, and other unusual conditions
  • Recommended repair materials and design schemes for distressed concrete structures
  • Testified in court as expert witness
